The house was commissioned in 1747 under King George II by Privy Councillor Friedrich Karl von Hardenberg, and appropriated by the Crown as the official residence of the Court master of Works and Gardens.

When the French General Mortier occupied Hanover in 1803 he set up his headquarters here, and in 1804 the house accommodated Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, Napoleon's Marshall and later King of Sweden and Norway. It was the family museum of the House of Guelph from 1866 until 1937, when it was acquired along with the Grosser Garten by the City of Hanover; in early 1939 it was comprehensively renovated. In the post-war era the house was used as a local heritage museum and residence into the 1990s.
Taken over in 1998 by the financial syndicate of Hanover, the house was thoroughly renovated and restored as an historic treasure.

Today the House presents as a stylish address for representative events. The Herrenhausen Verwaltungs GmbH, acquired it in 1998. She moved in the House of a conservation-oriented, very successful rehabilitation, taking into account historical plans. The noble, but very homely facilities with high-quality materials, open fireplace and comfortable Club chairs gives the impression of a private house; each room has its particular charm. The original interior is not preserved, but the elegant country house style and the image decoration with historical engravings on the subject of gardening art follow on from the previous function as the residence of the Director, garden. The vaulted cellar offers an elegant atmosphere for wine tastings and happy celebrations. A piece of jewelry is also the newly created, once the Baroque-designed Garden: with register-lined beds, an abundance of hydrangeas and perennials, water lily pool and light gravel he invites you to summer festivals. In historic, elegant ambience, combined with modern comforts and with the culinary offer of the kitchen from the Schlossküche Herrenhausen kitchen have guests here, whether in a small group with 12 or in large round with up to 60 people.
